The female nude has remained one of the central subjects of my practice, but I am interested in the body less as an image of femininity than as a changing field of perception. In this work, the figure is still recognizable, yet its boundaries are no longer entirely stable. This ambiguity is important to me. We rarely see an image without bringing something of ourselves into it. Recognition is never neutral: we complete what is missing, assign meaning to uncertain forms, and often see according to what we already know or expect. The muted body and the darker surrounding field create a tension between presence and disappearance. The red forms interrupt this restraint like concentrated points of emotion — something vivid emerging from an otherwise subdued surface. I work with thin, translucent layers of paint so that colour does not simply cover the surface but seems to remain suspended within it. This transparency allows light to pass through several layers at once, creating depth without heaviness and giving the figure a sense of being both physically present and slightly elusive. We have the ability to read things, to read them as we understand them.
